So let’s sort them out. Of all the cycling metrics for cyclists over 50, four are genuinely worth your attention. Three are worth ignoring completely.

1. Track: Resting Heart Rate and HRV, Read as a Trend

Heart rate variability becomes useful the moment you stop reading it as a daily score.

Recovery is the real limiter after 50, and resting heart rate and HRV are the only two metrics on a consumer watch that speak to it directly. HRV (heart rate variability), is the tiny variation in time between one heartbeat and the next, and a well-recovered nervous system produces more of it.

Both are meaningless in isolation, though. Your HRV number means nothing compared to anyone else’s, and very little compared to yesterday’s.

What matters is your own baseline, built over a few weeks of ordinary living. One bad night is noise. Late dinner, a glass of wine, a warm bedroom, and the number drops. Poor sleep may affect the number too.

The signal worth acting on is suppression that holds. HRV that sits below your normal range for several nights running is a sign your body has not finished recovering, and that is the pattern that should turn Wednesday’s hard ride into an easy spin.

Device accuracy varies enormously too, which is why you trust the direction of the line rather than the decimal point.

Watch the multi-night trend, ignore the individual days, and you have a recovery metric you can genuinely train off.

2. Track: Perceived Effort and Your Breathing

Kolie Moore, the Empirical Cycling coach who builds training plans around power data, argues that the free number is not the lesser one. Rate of perceived exertion is a parallel signal, he says, not a consolation prize.

That matters because almost every training article aimed at cyclists over 50 assumes a power meter, an FTP test, and a paid platform to interpret it all. Plenty of us have none of that.

The anchor is simple. Threshold-ish effort feels like a controlled, sustainable 7 to 7.5 out of 10, and your breathing stays steady rather than ragged.

The tell that you have gone over is a decoupling. A small increase in pace suddenly feels disproportionately harder than the effort you were just holding.

Riders with a big anaerobic capacity may not feel that jump straight away. Breathing is the more reliable real-time signal, so listen for the moment it turns ragged.

Best for anyone riding without power, or sanity-checking the numbers they already have. Skip the formal FTP test entirely if the thought of it is putting you off riding.

3. Track: Your Time on One Familiar Loop

This is the fitness test you can start this weekend with the bike and computer you already own. No subscription, no protocol, no suffering in a dark garage.

Pick one route you know well. Ride it regularly, and compare your time, effort and average heart rate across months rather than days.

It beats every app score after 50 because it grades you against your own history instead of a population average. That stops being academic once you pass 60, where the reference data thins out badly. Readers on training sites regularly complain the major platforms have no meaningful data for their age group past 70, and they are right.

Your loop has no such problem. It is a baseline of one, and you are the one.

The same route doubles as a laboratory. Change one variable at a time, your pacing or what you eat and drink beforehand, and the loop tells you honestly whether it helped.

Pick the loop once, then leave it alone. Its whole value comes from not changing.

4. Track: Heart Rate Zones Built on a Better Formula

The number baked into nearly every app you own is the one most likely to be wrong for you. Not slightly wrong. Wrong by enough to blunt your training.

That number is 220 minus your age, and it systematically underestimates true maximum heart rate in older adults, in some seniors by as much as 40 bpm. Its error grows with age, so the older you get, the worse it gets.

Run it at 60 and it gives you 160 bpm. Better estimates put the real figure nearer 166, and every zone underneath shifts down with it. Your “hard” rides have been aimed too low for years.

The fix takes ten seconds: Tanaka’s formula, 208 minus 0.7 times your age. At 60 that is 166 bpm. No formula is perfect, but validation studies consistently find this one tracks measured max in older adults more closely than 220 minus age does.

And if you already know your real max from repeated flat-out efforts, use that. A measured number beats any formula. Formulas predict the average rider, and plenty of riders sit 20 or 30 beats away from average.

The verdict: heart rate stays firmly on the list. The formula behind it does not.


5. Stop Chasing: The Calorie Count on Your Bike Computer

Now the delete list, starting with the number that has the hardest evidence against it. Low-cost smartwatches have been measured with calorie estimate errors ranging from 12.5% all the way to 57.4%.

Even the better devices routinely post mean absolute percentage errors above 20% in controlled exercise studies. A ride that reads 900 calories might have been 700, or 1,100.

It also depends on whose wrist it is on. In one device comparison, Apple watches showed the smallest bias, Garmin and Samsung systematically overestimated, and Fitbit was the most variable.

Two things make this worse for cyclists over 50. Accuracy degrades as body fat percentage rises, and riders without a power meter sit on the least accurate tier by default, since devices fall back from power to heart rate to plain speed and distance.

6. Stop Chasing: Strava Fitness Scores and Garmin Training Status

Nothing, ideally. That score is Training Load or Relative Effort pushed through an impulse-response model, and Strava’s own documentation states plainly that the trend matters more than the number itself.

The bigger problem is what it is weighted toward, which is training volume rather than fitness progress. That penalizes exactly the lower-volume rider this article is written for, the person riding three quality hours a week instead of twelve.

Heart-rate-based Relative Effort has a second flaw. A hot, humid ride scores higher than a cooler, more productive one at identical power, purely because heat and dehydration push your heart rate up.

So consider this your permission slip. The platform is not grading you, and “unproductive” is a software label, not a medical opinion.

Fine for: a rough sense of direction across three or four months.

Not fine for: judging a single ride, a single week, or your worth as a cyclist.

7. Stop Chasing: Average Speed and Your VO2 Max Number
