One repost alone passed 1.5 million views. It got the weapon wrong.

What Happened on the Road

Meryem Belkihel, a Moroccan cyclist who posts as MeghyLost, filmed it on her bike camera in northern Kenya in August 2025, near the end of a three-year solo ride across Africa.

A man ran after her carrying a long stick. She pedaled away, and by her account, the chase lasted about 20 seconds.

She posted the full footage in a YouTube vlog in September 2025. A short cut went viral in October 2026, captioned as a machete attack.

Her Side of the Story

“So this video was filmed last year. And the man is holding a traditional Samburu stick,” she wrote on X on October 16, 2026. “Was it frightening? Yes. But it was one moment in a journey that lasted years.”

Locals had warned her about that road, a roughly 30 km (about 19 mile) stretch through an area with local conflict. She says she should have listened.

One incident, she added, “shouldn’t define an entire country, let alone a whole continent.”

33 Countries and Back to Kenya

Belkihel finished the ride in November 2025 after about 34,000 km (about 21,000 miles) and 33 countries. She says it was one of only two incidents in three years.

When the clip went viral, she was back in Kenya: “Yes, it happened last year in Kenya and ironically, I’m right back here enjoying every single second of it!”
