In today’s car-centric society, being a male cyclist without a car can sometimes raise eyebrows in the dating world.
But is there really a stigma around men who choose two wheels over four?
We need to know if women look at male cyclists like Andy Stitzer from 40 year old Virgin…..or are women think “I bet he’s got great endurance…”
So we took a look over on a recent Reddit thread in r/bikecommuting sparked an interesting discussion about dating while being car-free, and the responses might surprise you.
The Question – Is It Possible?
Men – the short answer is yes! โ
However, according to Reddit users it may not be that easy, depending on what your criteria is!
The original poster asked about dating experiences as a man who primarily uses a bicycle for transportation.
A male cyclist asks about navigating the dating scene without owning a car.
Having faced judgment from employers, potential partners, and friends for being car-free, he questions whether getting a moped might improve his dating prospects.
He specifically seeks advice from other men about their dating experiences while being car-free and asks women whether they would consider dating someone without a car.
And the community responded with a mix of perspectives and personal stories.
All in typical Reddit style!

and there was more support from another user talking about some cities moving towards a carless society…

photojones reframed criticism as a filtering mechanism (and there were others agreeing). I guess this could work!
and there was more:
I view it like this: Choosing to live a car free lifestyle is just that, a lifestyle choice. As long as you live, near where you work or in an area where public transit works, the only people who would look down on someone’s choice of living car free are the people who you wouldn’t want to be around anyway.

So, most of the comments were positive about finding women if you only have your two wheels as transport.
You Need A Car?
Having said that, there were a few who claimed that a car was needed at least some of the time.
๐ค In my opinion: I think you probably would need a car if you’re not in one of the big cities.
The more rural you go, the more a car is a necessity and is probably impractical if you’re looking to date
Here’s one who lives pretty rural:

Looking Forward
As cities become more bike-friendly and environmental consciousness grows, the stigma around car-free living continues to fade.
Some, like this user, even envision using dating apps a bit more – ideally for cyclists:

So, the consensus seems clear: while being car-free may present some logistical challenges in dating, it often serves as an effective filter for finding partners who share similar values and lifestyle choices.
๐ณ As cities evolve to become more bike-friendly, the dating landscape for cyclists continues to improve.
Having said that, we didn’t trek away from bike forums too much to get our answers. Maybe the opinion is different elsewhere?

Here’s one last comment that we liked!
I feel like the “man picks up the woman” trope is outdated. As if the woman is a damsel that needs to be saved by a man and carted around like a child.
