Now hold that number against another one. In the same year, 39,254 Americans died in traffic crashes. Researchers now attribute more American deaths to vehicle exhaust than to the crashes we actually count, and nobody ran a public safety campaign about it.

Which raises an awkward question about cycling and air pollution for those of us out there at 20mph with no windshield, no cabin filter, and lungs working three times harder than the guy in the Suburban who just passed us. If that air is doing this much damage to people sitting still inside cars, what is it doing to us?

The honest answer is not the comforting one you may have read online. It is still, on balance, good news for anyone who rides.

The Numbers Behind the Headline

That figure comes from a June 2026 study by the International Council on Clean Transportation, and the methodology is broader than most pollution research.

Rather than counting tailpipe emissions alone, the ICCT looked at the whole chain: emissions from producing road fuel as well as burning it. The team also drew on real-world sensor measurements gathered with the FIA Foundation. These are modeled estimates of deaths attributable to that pollution, not names on death certificates.

The asthma finding may be the one that stings most. Vehicle pollution is linked to 23,100 new pediatric asthma cases in the United States each year, and American kids account for one in ten of every such case worldwide. No other country comes close.

“At a time when many Americans are concerned about the impact of environmental toxins on their families’ health, public health authorities can’t afford to overlook the impact of vehicle pollution on mortality and respiratory health outcomes,” says Lingzhi Jin, senior researcher at the International Council on Clean Transportation.

There is a hopeful half to the study, too. If zero-emission vehicles reach 100% of the US new-car market by 2040, the ICCT projects 108,400 premature deaths averted by 2050, along with 42,100 pediatric asthma cases. The air we ride through is not fixed. It has been getting cleaner for decades, and it can keep going.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Riding in Traffic

You have probably seen the cheerful claim making the rounds in cycling circles: drivers actually breathe worse air than cyclists, because pollution collects inside the cabin. It gets shared a lot because we want it to be true.

The first half of it is real. A meta-analysis of seven studies found PM2.5 concentrations along cyclist routes run about 17 to 18% lower than along motorist routes. Sitting in a metal box in a queue of tailpipes is genuinely a bad place to be.

Then the second half falls apart, because concentration is not the same thing as dose.

Think of it like drinking from a garden hose versus sipping from a glass. The water is identical. How much ends up inside you is not remotely the same.

That is the difference between the air around you and the air in you. A cyclist’s minute ventilation runs an average of 2.1 times higher than a car passenger’s, and reviews put the range at 2 to 4.7 times depending on how fast you are going. Ride harder, breathe more, take in more of everything in that air.

Run the arithmetic and the pleasant version collapses. A 2016 systematic review by Cepeda and colleagues found that active commuters moved through 18% lower pollutant concentrations yet absorbed a dose roughly 4.5 times higher than people in cars. Cyclists came out top of every transport mode for inhalation and uptake, ahead of walkers, because of ventilation rate and time spent in traffic.

The popular claim measures the air. What matters is the amount that ends up in your lungs. Lower concentration, higher dose.

Why You Should Keep Riding Anyway

A team led by Marko Tainio asked the obvious follow-up question in 2016, in a paper titled Can air pollution negate the health benefits of cycling and walking? They modeled the exercise benefit and the pollution harm against each other to find the crossover point.

The answer is not close.

At the global average urban PM2.5 level of 22 micrograms per cubic meter, you would need to ride seven hours a day before extra riding stopped adding health benefit. Not seven hours a week. Seven hours a day, every day, before the math even turned neutral.

Scale it to a normal life. For a half-hour daily ride, PM2.5 would have to hit 95 micrograms per cubic meter before extra riding stopped paying you back, and only about 1% of the world’s cities exceed that. The air has to get to 160 before that half hour actually costs you more than it gives.

Push it further into fantasy. Drop yourself into filthy air at 100 micrograms per cubic meter, the kind of reading that triggers emergency advisories, and up to an hour and fifteen minutes of daily riding still produces a net reduction in mortality risk.

Then there is the comparison that fits most of us best. If your alternative to riding is driving rather than sitting on the couch, benefits exceed harms up to three and a half hours of cycling a day.

The authors put it plainly: air pollution will not negate the health benefits of active travel in the vast majority of settings worldwide.

For a hobby cyclist doing an hour on ordinary American roads, the exercise is doing far more good than the air is doing harm. The pollution is real and the benefit is bigger, by a margin no ride you are realistically going to take could overturn.

Five Ways to Breathe Less Junk on Your Ride

None of that means the exposure is worth ignoring. It is close to free to reduce, and a handful of small routing habits do most of the work.

Ride one street back from the main road

Hankey and Marshall modeled all 13,604 street blocks in Minneapolis and found that shifting to a low-traffic road just one block over cut black carbon by 19% and ultrafine particles by 11%.

Separate on-bicycle monitoring by the same researchers found that traffic right beside you accounts for roughly half your black carbon and ultrafine exposure. A hundred yards of separation does a lot of work.

Take the bike path over the painted lane

After adjusting for traffic density, background levels, and intersection proximity, painted bike lanes carried about 33% more black carbon and nitrogen dioxide than separated bike paths.

The stripe of white paint does nothing for your lungs.

Physical separation does.

Mind the trucks, and skip the morning rush

Each truck passing a cyclist produces an average spike of 31,000 particles per cubic centimeter.

Particulate levels also run higher during the morning rush than in the afternoon, so if your schedule flexes, ride later.

Be realistic about masks

But performance dropped to around 19% for black carbon and ultrafine particles, which are exactly the pollutants traffic produces most.

Fit is where masks fail, not filter material. They are not useless, but they are nowhere near the fix people assume.

Check the AQI before a hard session

Intensity is the multiplier here, because it drives ventilation.

An easy spin on a bad-air day pulls in far less than an interval session on the same roads. When the number is ugly, keep the effort gentle or move it indoors.

For most people, yes, and your doctor is the one to confirm it. At average urban air quality, extra riding keeps adding benefit until roughly seven hours a day. Even in filthy air at 100 micrograms per cubic meter, up to an hour and a quarter of daily riding still lowers your mortality risk.

If you are sensitive, watch the AQI, keep the intensity moderate on poor-air days, and stay off arterial roads during rush hour. Intensity matters more than riders assume, because harder efforts pull far more air through your lungs.
