Imagine setting out for a long bike ride, not on winding country roads or challenging mountain passes, but in a continuous loop.
Thatโs exactly what one cyclist did, completing an astonishing 150 miles entirely within a single roundabout, simply because they “thought it was kinda funny”.
Started as 100 Mile Goal
What began as a goal of 100 miles soon escalated as the rider, feeling good at 60 miles, decided to push further. This incredible feat, posted on Reddit, described by one commenter as “unhinged“, showcases remarkable mental endurance.
To combat the inherent monotony of circling, the rider employed several clever strategies.
The first 60 miles were tackled “rawdogged with no headphones,” with entertainment coming from “playing word games, counting things,” to the point of being able to recite the alphabet backward three times in one lap.
For the remaining 90 miles, a “healthy mix of chappell roan, kanye west, rachmaninoff, and eminem” provided a soundtrack, with a particular nod that “Rach 2 goes hard for bike rides“.
The cyclist found relief by not constantly checking mileage, instead measuring time by albums and achieving “2 different periods where I didnโt look up from the ground for ~2hrs at a time“.
4,000 ft Elevation Gain
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this circular journey was the reported elevation gain of over 4,000 feet. Many commenters, including one who asked, “How on earth do you get 4000ft of elevation on a roundabout??“, expressed disbelief, assuming roundabouts are flat.
However, this particular roundabout was “a bit vertical,” with the rider explaining, “I would vary from 20-15mph on a lap… I got into a routine where I would ride out of the saddle for a 15 revolutions to make it up the ‘hill’ each lap”.
Even a tiny bit of elevation each lap all adds up when you’re notching up so many revolutions.
Here’s how one commenter puts it (quite funnily):
Big Mac
This dedication to a seemingly absurd challenge, including quick breaks for snacks and even a McDonald’s Big Mac and Oreo McFlurry, took place in a “pretty desolate” industrial park, allowing for safe left-hand turns and minimal traffic interruption.
This truly was an extraordinary display of commitment and an unusual way to conquer 150 miles.
