What’s the Biggest Waste of Money in Cycling Gear?

One rider asked r/cycling what was the worst value in the sport, and more than 860 comments piled on with prices, photos and punchlines.

We read through the thread, pulled the complaints riders kept raising, and checked them against independent evidence and current U.S. prices. We are talking about gear that is priced well above what it delivers, not outright fraud.

All prices below were checked in September 2026 and will drift.

1. Carbon Bottle Cages That Cost More Than Your Tires

You can pay $70 for something whose only job is to hold a $13 bottle of water.

The rider who started the thread put it like this: “Carbon water bottle cages. I spend $70 so my bike could hold a $2 bottle of water more aerodynamically. The cage weighs less than my shame.”

The thread’s own top reply pushed back, and fairly: carbon cages sell for as little as $10, so the poster mostly overpaid. Our point stands anyway, because the $10 cage does the same job.

Nobody has published a proper material-against-material retention test, and Elite, the largest cage maker in the business, says grip comes from a cage’s shape and springiness, not what it is made of. Save the $60 for tires.

2. Sunglasses at $230 That You Do Not Ride Faster In

Walk into any shop and you will see glass that costs more than a decent training tire. Oakley’s flagship road shades run around $230 on the brand’s own U.S. store.

For most recreational riders the premium is about fashion and pro association, not vision. Optics and fit at the top were once clearly better, and that gap has closed. $75 to $100 glasses are this good now.

An independent 2026 review picked the Tifosi Moab, at roughly $80, as its best-value cycling pair. That is a third of the money.

Riders in the thread raised the obvious objection, and it deserves a straight answer: cycling glasses earn their price by not shattering into your eye. But impact resistance is a legal floor on all U.S. eyewear, and a lens carrying the ANSI Z87+ marking (the stamp for high-impact lenses) protects the same whether it cost $30 or $300. Check for the marking, not the price tag.

3. Jerseys at $300 and the Price of Looking Pro

Nothing turns heads at the cafe stop like kit fresh off a pro team’s back. That is the trap.

The fundamentals of a summer jersey have barely changed in years. It is still polyester yarn, a zipper and printing. What changes is the color story, and brands count on you chasing this season’s shade.

The dearest regular-production jersey we could find retails at around $380, with mainstream premium around $200 to $265. Season end discounts of up to 60 percent show where the margin lives.

Think of premium clothing like a car paint job. It looks different in the driveway but the engine is identical. Buy last season at 35 to 55 percent off.

Value lines from big brands, plus Decathlon, use the same basic fabrics without the status tax. Fit still matters, especially in bib shorts. Color does not make you faster.

4. Cycling Computers That Do Far More Than You Need

Your handlebars do not need another smartphone.

The core tools have not changed much. You need reliable GPS and data fields you can read in the sun. Yet $400 to $700 units keep adding press release features that sound essential in June and get ignored by August.

The sweet spot sits much lower. $159 to $249 computers cover the essentials.

The Magene C606 V2 at about $160 and the Coros Dura at about $250 handle what most riders actually use. Spend the $300 you saved on a bike fit or a weekend away riding.

Two things do justify paying up, mind you. A bigger screen is far easier to read if your eyesight is not what it was, and if you follow routes in unfamiliar places, a proper map display beats squinting at a breadcrumb line.

5. Proprietary Parts That Lock In Your Wallet

One answer in the thread drew 112 upvotes for naming the problem and then proposing the fix.

“Proprietary components. Truly evil,” one reply ran, before adding: “We should demand they move to a few, universal standards.”

Proprietary seatposts and one-piece bar-and-stem cockpits work fine until they do not. Then you discover the replacement comes from one supplier, in one size.

Look at what a one-piece cockpit costs to change your mind about. Roval’s Rapide lists at about $700 and Canyon’s CP053 much the same, and your bar width and stem length are fixed for the life of the bike. Wanting 10mm more reach means another $700 cockpit instead of a $50 stem.

Seatposts run the same play, with Roval’s Alpinist at around $325. Stick with standard parts when you can.

6. The Top-Tier Carbon Frame Upgrade

Here is the pitch that empties wallets. Same model name, same mould, same paint, just a lighter grade of carbon for a steep premium.

The arithmetic is brutal. Specialized’s Tarmac SL8 comes out of one mould in two carbon grades: the top frame weighs 685g at $5,500 a frameset, the second-tier frame 780g at $3,500. That is $2,000 for 95 grams, and Trek runs the same ladder with the Madone.

Because the shapes are identical, there is nothing for the money to change except mass, and no independent test shows the dearer grade is faster.

Frame design is a different story, though. Wind tunnel work on 47 bikes found an old unaerodynamic alloy frame needed about 23 watts more than a modern superbike to hold 25mph (40kph), and deep aero wheels clawed back under 6 of those watts. The frame shape earned the rest.

So shape is worth paying for. Grade is not. Pair a cheaper carbon grade with better wheels.

💡 Top-grade frames do have their place. If you race, or you are chasing every last gram up a long climb, that 95 grams is a real difference and you will know why you paid for it. Most of us are not doing either.

7. The Top-Tier Groupset Jump

Dura-Ace versus 105. Red versus Rival. The names alone make your fingers twitch.

Shifting feel and bragging rights improve as you climb. Measured speed barely moves. The key technologies that influence performance are usually the same in a third tier group as in a top tier group.

The weight gap is real, mind you. Roughly 500g separates 105 Di2 from Dura-Ace Di2, and the same gap sits between Rival AXS and RED AXS. That is about 7 percent of a complete bike, yet no independent test shows it makes you faster.

What you give up lower down is braking refinement and a front shift a generation behind. Testers cannot tell the rear shifting apart.

💡For most recreational riders, third or second tier shifting does the job. Put the savings toward wheels you will feel on every ride.

8. Ceramic Oversized Pulley Wheels Take the Crown

This was the single highest-voted answer in the whole thread, at 592 upvotes, and the evidence backs the riders up.

An oversized pulley wheel system replaces your stock rear derailleur cage with two giant jockey wheels and ceramic bearings. The claim is less chain bend and less friction, sold at around $600 to $800 as of this writing.

The maker claims 2 to 4 watts saved. But independent testing found the real gain with a clean, well-maintained chain is closer to 1 to 2 watts at 250 watts.

That works out to roughly $300 or more per watt, paid for jewelry on your derailleur. A clean chain beats a $600 cage.

A fresh chain, faster tires, a proper bike fit or an aero helmet returns far more speed per dollar. Wind tunnel testing of 47 lids put the average aero helmet 4.5 watts up on the average vented one, and a helmet costing about $170 beat lids at three times the price.

Cheaper drop-in pulley sets run about $200 to $300, but those swap only the jockey wheels, not the whole cage system, and the math still favors basic maintenance. That gap between price, promise and measured benefit makes this the biggest scam in cycling gear for most recreational riders.

Where Spending More Actually Buys Speed

Cynicism is easy. This list keeps us honest.

None of this means you are wrong to want nice things. Buying a bike you love looking at is a perfectly good reason to spend, and this is an argument about performance per dollar, not about what you are allowed to enjoy.

Some expensive gear earns its keep, ride after ride. Tires lead the list. Good tires offer the best performance per dollar.

The numbers are not subtle. Rolling resistance testing at 18mph puts a tough training tire at 22 watts and a fast race tire under 7, so swapping both is worth 25 to 30 watts.

Wheels come next, especially a light, stiff set wrapped in great rubber. Buy them for the rubber and the build, not the sticker: that same 47-bike tunnel programme found under 4 watts between the best and worst aero wheelsets, with no correlation to price.

Fit matters more than price in bib shorts and helmets, so pay for the one that fits you best, often mid-range. Cold and wet weather gear is worth real money too, because good membranes turn a shivering day into a great ride. A professional bike fit and quality bearings round out the splurge list.

Before you buy anything, run the wish list test. Ask how many watts, how much comfort or how many extra rides it buys per dollar, then wait for the season end sales.
