It happened on April 23, 2026, and a rider’s camera caught the plate.

What Happened on Sugar Pike Road

Ten North Georgia Cycling Association riders were on Sugar Pike Road in Cherokee County, north of Atlanta, Georgia.

Ride leader Richard Collins said a Honda Pilot followed the group honking for about two minutes. “Just excessive. Didn’t let off the horn,” he said.

Deputies say the driver passed with no oncoming traffic, struck two cyclists and left the scene.

The mirror clipped rider Scott Hager, then hit Collins and knocked him off his bike.

Collins said an orthopedist later found a fracture in his lower spine.

What the Driver Told Deputies

Deputies traced the plate to Jerry Wayne Ross, 72, of Woodstock, and found him at a neighbor’s home.

The incident report says he had repeatedly called 911 on cyclists and said it was not “reasonable” for them to take the whole lane.

He declined to watch the video, the report says, because he “knew he did nothing wrong.”

Ross faces six charges, including two counts of aggravated assault and hit-and-run.

Many reports described him smiling in his booking photo. Hager said, “This guy was angry.”

No plea or trial outcome had been reported as of October 2026.

The Same Road, Six Months Earlier

Georgia law requires drivers to give cyclists at least 3 feet when passing.

On October 19, 2025, a driver going more than 90 mph killed cyclist Carlos Moreno Gutierrez, 51, on Sugar Pike Road.

That driver, Lane William Keyes, pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle and DUI. In September 2026, he was sentenced to 15 years, the first 10 in prison.
