The incident, caught on video by one of the riders, has gone viral across cycling communities.

The footage shows the BMW riding aggressively in the bike lane, forcing cyclists to swerve into traffic or bunny hop onto the sidewalk to avoid being struck. At one point, the driver or a passenger throws a drink at the group. Multiple riders reported similar incidents throughout the day, suggesting it wasn’t a single moment of road rage but a sustained effort to harass cyclists across several miles of PCH.

“I recently had a truck follow me around trying to clip me.”

The cyclist who shot the video is reportedly a member of a professional cycling team. His smooth, composed response, including a parallel bunny hop onto the curb at speed to escape the car, drew praise from viewers.

The driver’s BMW license plate frame traces back to a Riverside dealership. He was later identified after apparently posting the video to his own Instagram account.

The incident was reported to police. According to a social post, “police are hesitant to take anything regarding cyclists seriously.” A commenter claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy responded that charges had been filed, though others questioned the claim.

The legal debate lit up the thread. “Once he threw something it became an assault. File a police report,” wrote one commenter. Another added: “The throwing of the cup was battery. The entire thing was assault and battery.” A more detailed legal breakdown noted that California Vehicle Code 23110 makes throwing objects from a vehicle a felony when there is intent to cause harm.

Not everyone was surprised. “As a cyclist, this is unfortunately nothing new,” wrote one rider. “I recently had a truck follow me around trying to clip me.”

The video has since been reposted by the Lawyers for Cyclists Instagram account. If you have dashcam footage of any incidents involving the same vehicle on PCH that weekend, the original poster is still looking for evidence.
