Ever had that feeling you’re being watched while riding?

The Unexpected Trail Buddy

In a viral video titled “Bear In The Bikepark,” what starts as a typical trail ride quickly becomes anything but ordinary.

Two riders are cruising down a forested trail when suddenly, a brown bear bursts from the right side of the trail, apparently deciding that these cyclists look like interesting “playmates”.

Not Your Average Chase Scene

The helmet cam footage from the rear rider captures the whole nerve-wracking scene. When slowed down, you can really appreciate just how close this encounter was – it’s way too close for comfort.

The lead rider’s shouts in Slovak probably didn’t need any translation; fear sounds the same in any language.

A Lucky Escape

Fortunately, this particular bear apparently wasn’t too committed to the chase. After a brief pursuit that probably felt like an eternity to the riders, it decides these fast-moving snacks aren’t worth the effort and disappears back into the woods.

The riders eventually stop, and between gasps for air, share what might be the understatement of the year about what just happened.

The Takeaway

While encounters like this are rare, they’re a reminder that when we’re out riding trails, we’re visitors in wildlife territory.

Maybe these riders should consider adding “outrun a bear” to their Strava achievements – though hopefully, it’s not a segment anyone else tries to claim.

For anyone planning to ride in bear country, it might be worth packing some bear spray along with those energy gels. Just saying.
